Birdwatch is an exhibition of historical and current images of birds. The exhibition begins with a selection of prints by 19th centruy artist John James Audubon. Painting in the mid-20th century, artist Morris Graves inbued his Asian-inspired drawings and paintings of birds with deep metatphorical significance. Contemporary artist Jacqueline Bishop's miniature paintings of birds often represent species endangered in the Amazon and the Gulf Coat. Kathryn Spence's pigeons and kestrels, made with trash, twine and bits of cast off fabric, convey the precariousness of birds' place in the environment. Both Misako Inaoka and Justin Gibbens create hybrid animals-part bird, part mammal or reptile. Rigo 23's embroidered reproductions of "lost bird" notices he collects in the streets of San Francisco capture the ambiguities in our relationship to birds-we admire them for their ability to fly, yet we sometimes seek to keep them caged.
