Sun Valley Wellness Festival
Sun Valley Wellness Festival, May 22-26, 2014
The Sun Valley Wellness Institute is pleased to announce that two renowned inspirational wellness speakers, world recording-breaking long distance swimmer Diana Nyad, and New York Times best-selling author, wellness activist and cancer thriver Kris Carr, will be keynote speakers at the 17th annual Sun Valley Wellness Festival held Memorial Day weekend, May 22-26, 2014 at the Sun Valley Resort in Sun Valley, Idaho. Nyad will speak on Friday evening, May 23 at 6:00pm and Carr will speak on Sunday evening, May 25 at 6:30pm.
“We are excited to present a truly amazing slate of wellness speakers for the 2014 Sun Valley Wellness Festival, who are sure to inspire us to find new ways of living healthier, happier lives,” said Elisabeth Grabher, President of the non-profit Sun Valley Wellness Institute which produces the Festival each year.
Diana Nyad inspired the world when, at the age of 64, she became the first person to swim 110 miles from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. On September 2, 2013, in her fifth and final attempt, Nyad successfully fulfilled her life-long dream of completing the long and dangerous swim. Upon completing her grueling 53 hour journey, a breathless Nyad told the world, “I have three messages. One is we should never ever give up. Two is you are never too old to chase your dreams. And three is it looks like a solitary sport but it takes a team.”
Nyad has never been one to quit. In July of 2010, at the age of 60, she began her “Xtreme Dream” quest of swimming from Cuba to Florida, a task she had failed to finish thirty years previously. When asked her motivation, she replied, “Because I’d like to prove to the other 60-year-olds that it is never too late to start your dreams.” Nyad was unsuccessful in her quest in 2010 and tried two more times 2011 and 2012 before completing this year’s historic swim. In the 1970′s, Nyad was the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world, amassing several world records which led to inductions to many Halls of Fame, such as the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame. Nyad became a prominent sports broadcaster, filing compelling reports for NPR, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Fox Sports, and the New York Times.
Nyad has written three books and has earned a reputation as a uniquely passionate and entertaining public speaker, earning standing ovations with a broad spectrum of audiences. In her recent television appearance on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, Nyad noted "Every human being on this planet has their pain and their heartache, and it's up to all of us to find our way back to light." Her Festival keynote presentation is titled “Find A Way”.
Kris Carr is a New York Times best-selling author, popular motivational wellness activist and cancer survivor known for her “Crazy Sexy” approach to thriving in life. Kris, who was diagnosed in 2003 with a very rare and incurable but slow-growing stage 4 cancer, will share her inspirational journey about living a full and healthy life, no matter what challenges may be presented. As an irreverent foot soldier in the fight against disease, Carr inspires countless individuals and their families to make the link between their personal health and the health of the planet. Her witty anecdotes, diet advice, and tips for overcoming adversity motivate her audiences to think outside the box in order to become empowered participants in health and healing. Karr’s Festival keynote presentation is titled “Crazy, Sexy Wellness.”
“Kris is a ray of light that is needed to raise awareness of what it means to give back. What more can one wish for? She is a true leader of courage and inspiration.” —Donna Karan
