Many ski resorts have ice rinks, but few have an ice rink with the special flair and legendary history of the Sun Valley Ice Rink. Built in 1937, this beautiful outdoor rink just outside the Sun Valley Lodge is the one made famous by Olympic star Sonja Heine in “Sun Valley Serenade” and is now home to the world famous ice shows in the summer. Over the years, skating’s biggest names have taken to the ice here. Nancy Kerrigan, Scott Hamilton, Katarina Witt and Sasha Cohen are among the stars who have performed in recent years.
The Sun Valley Ice Rink is open to visitors year-round and offers private and group lessons as well as skate rentals. It’s the perfect place to take a stroll around the ice with your family or for couples to take in the romance of skating under the stars on a moonlit night. Don’t be surprised if you rub elbows with Olympic Gold Medalists perfecting their routines for the Sun Valley Ice Show.
Sun Valley also offers plenty of opportunity to skate on natural ice. At the large outdoor rink at Atkinson’s Park in Ketchum the skating is free and they have a variety of skates, helmets and hockey sticks available to borrow. In the south valley, Roberta McKercher park in Hailey is flooded each winter to make a free community ice rink.
