Fishing (winter)
Fly fishing in Sun Valley is every fisherman’s dream. The Wood River
Valley boasts some of the best trout fishing in the West and winter
time is no exception. The winter months offer terrific hatches, fewer
people and the magic and solitude of casting your fly while surrounded
by the region’s breathtaking mountains and snowy landscape.
Endless
opportunities await both the novice and experienced angler on the
region’s four main rivers: the Big Wood, the Little Wood, Big Lost and
Silver Creek. Few rivers in the world contain as many fish per mile as
the Big Wood, which flows right through Ketchum, and the winter months
are some of the most productive. One of the most beautiful freestone
streams in the West, The Big Wood is perfect for wading almost
everywhere and trying out different fly fishing techniques. It’s also
very kind to the fly fisher who is new to the sport.
The
Big Lost is the place to take the kids to catch some trout for dinner.
It’s beautiful, secluded and the fish are easy. Silver Creek is the
crown jewel of the Sun Valley area, a classic limestone spring creek
with slow moving, gin-clear waters. It’s one of the most challenging
fly fishing streams in the country, but you’ll be rewarded with some of
the biggest wild trout you will ever see.
Fishing in the
winter months offers great midge activity and therefore provides very
good nymphing. On the Big Wood much of the fishing is catch and release
during the winter months and features robust native rainbow trout. The
warmer days that bring the afternoon temps above freezing can be
exceptional.

full day of fishing on local rivers. Winter fishing is a great change
