There’s little that compares with the feeling of straddling a high-powered machine skimming across the snow at full throttle. Whether you’ve never tried the exhilarating sport of snowmobiling or you have first hand experience with how thrilling and addictive it can be, the Sun Valley area has some of the best snowmobiling terrain in the country.
Snowmobilers can enjoy a vast network of groomed snowmobiling trails and thousands of acres of off-trail riding in the nearby Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin. Trails closer to the Sun Valley area are also available up major drainages in the adjacent Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
With over 170 miles of pristine groomed trails and thousands of acres of snow-covered mountainous terrain, the Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin is an uncrowded snowmobiler’s paradise that is still relatively undiscovered. In addition to groomed trails, there are miles of ungroomed trails that splinter off the main trail areas leading to lakes and wide open meadows. Don’t be surprised if you spot a herd of elk sharing the scenery with you.
The Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin boasts a vast amount of riding for every level of experience. There’s trail riding, tree riding, mountain riding, bowl riding and powder riding. If you’re a beginner, you can feel safe following the marked trails that meander over hills and meadows. Experts can test their skills carving out challenging paths off trail in the endless acres of backcountry snow.
For a change of pace from skiing, snowmobiling is a great way to explore the breathtaking winter beauty of the wilderness surrounding the Sun Valley area. Rentals and guided trips are available from several different outfitters in the area.
