Strapping on a couple of snowshoes and heading out for an invigorating jaunt through the woods is a great way to spend an afternoon in Sun Valley with family and friends. This ancient mode of traveling over snow has become a favorite modern winter sport and Sun Valley offers endless possibilities for the snowshoe enthusiast.
You’ll find miles and miles of maintained snowshoe trails in several locations in and around Sun Valley, including the top of Bald Mountain, the Sun Valley Nordic Center, the North Valley Trails and Galena Lodge (the northern Wood River Valley’s Nordic ski center), and in the Sawtooth Valley at Alturas Lake and Park Creek.
Highlights include exploring the scenic vistas and wide open meadows at the Galena Lodge snowshoe trail system, where you can climb close to the headwaters of the Big Wood River or take a trail leading to three backcountry yurts that can be rented for overnight use. Join a group tour lead by a knowledgeable guide. Or attend a full moon dinner at the Lodge, where guests snowshoe or ski in brilliant moonlight. From the Sun Valley Nordic Center you can snowshoe a 3.2 mile trail that leads to Trail Creek Cabin, a former hunting lodge, which is open for lunch and dinner. Or get some altitude by riding a chairlift to the top of Bald Mountain and snowshoeing the 1.4 miles of trails along the apex of Baldy to Seattle Ridge Lodge.
Snowshoeing is an easily accessible way for the whole family to experience the splendor and magic of Sun Valley’s winter landscape. It’s also a low impact, good form of exercise in the winter. Plus, modern design innovations have made today’s snowshoes lighter, easier to use and a lot more fun.
