The Big Wood

Season: March - May.  Visit Idaho Fish & Game for exact dates.
Species Available: Rainbow, Brown & Brook Trout

A divine Freestone fishery that provides no better place for the novice to learn, The Big Wood runs for about fifty miles, more or less along side route 75, winding through the high desert grom its 8,900 foot Galena Summit to its basin at Magic Reservoir. Some might say this what many veteran fly anglers would dream up, if left to design their own fisheries. With miles, upon miles of access, easy wading, nice sized, wild fish, and a beautiful backdrop, there is no better place to spend a hot summer day, or even a winter afternoon. It's impossible to miss the cottonwoods, riparians for this river, from which the water takes it name. The Wood is slowly being recognized as one of the most productive winter fisheries in the western United States, offering anglers dry fly action, as well as nymphing and streamer opportunities. The Wood is primarily a rainbow, cutt-bow fishery, with a healthy population of brown trout immediately above and below Magic Reservoir. There is no stocking on the main Big Wood River, so be ready for hard fighting, healthy trout!
