The gem state's gem of Tail Water. The Lost River, near Mackay, can be a great example of big fish in small water. The Lost is a unique fishery for anglers with some experience. The Big Lost River Valley is surrounded by Idaho's tallest, most inhospitable mountain peaks-Devil's Bedstead in the Pioneer Mountains, as well as Mt. Borah--Idaho's highest peak. In an area that is ten degrees colder than any other place in the state, it's no place to call home; but the large population of rainbow trout makes this a worthy adventure. Sight nymphing to big rainbows is common, as well as a few strong dry fly opportunities throughout the year. The cool waters released from the dam at Mackay reservoir provide a nutrient rich environment that grows strong rainbows up to 25 inches. The Lost River also offers fine fishing in many miles of tributaries, mostly located in the Copper Basin area, above Trail Creek summit. Moose, antelope, bear, and elk sightings are not uncommon, and definitely add to this angling pursuit.
