We are heartbroken to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Sun Valley Writers’ Conference.  The wrenching uncertainties caused by the spread of COVID-19 make it impossible for us to safely confirm the travel, logistics, and participation of all those who were so looking forward to joining us this summer—our superb group of writers, donors, attendees, staff, and volunteers. We have agonized over whether to delay or cancel. But it appears that the arc of full recovery will reach beyond our ability to effectively plan for July. It is hard to imagine that anything can replace the joy that we share together during our magical four days in Sun Valley. Thankfully, we still retain the wise, surprising, and inspirational voices of our writers. So we will now adapt and pivot to bring those voices to an even wider digital audience, in an array of imaginative ways, during the coming weeks and months.  We know this will have an impact on our community near and far and we are so sorry to have to make this difficult decision. But without a doubt, the Conference has a long life, both behind us and ahead of us. We are already making plans for next ...

12:00 am
Taking place over Labor Day Weekend, Rebecca’s Private Idaho is considered one of the top gravel events in the world, for great reasons: Miles and miles of breathtaking riding across some of the most scenic and challenging terrain on earth; a festive vibe that permeates events both on and off the bike, and a limited (but growing) field of ultra-stoked riders, from enthusiasts to pros, who join their World Champion host Rebecca Rusch to test their mettle on the Queen’s Stage Race, Baked Potato, French Fry, and Tater Tot courses, all on Idaho’s stunning gravel back roads. The best part: Every rider’s entry fee and many of the events open to the public raise funds for Rebecca’s nonprofit Be Good™ Foundation, enriching communities from Idaho to Africa by using the bicycle as a catalyst for healing, empowerment and evolution (local beneficiaries include the Wood River Trails Coalition and Idaho Interscholastic Cycling League). Besides participating in the event or cheering riders on, the general public is welcome to enjoy booths, food, beverages and music at Saturday’s Gear Expo at Forest Service Park and Sunday’s Off-the-Wagon Days celebration at Festival Meadows. A connection to our history and heritage and the days before motorized travel.  A celebration of the lives and livelihoods of people before us that inspired our town on a path to where we are today. Come to Main Street and see the largest non-motorized parade in the Pacific Northwest. Wheels, wagons and western cowboys combine with marching bands and Basque dancers to make this a lively, colorful event.  As the parade ends, we roll from the past into the present with live music at the Street Party on Town Square. Throughout the weekend there will be many activities for you to enjoy – pancake breakfast, a bareback riding demonstration, an arts and crafts festival and an antique fair. Listen to cowboy poets and meandering musicians wandering our streets or shop at our boutiques and art galleries.  With many free children’s activities this is a family-friendly occasion. More than just a fun weekend, this event fosters a sense of place, connects us to the past and hopefully inspires, educates and provide perspectives for the future. The Trailing of the Sheep Festival was started in 1996 in response to the rapid loss of farms and ranches and the rapid growth in the Wood River Valley. The Festival preserves the stories and colorful history of sheep ranchers and herders, celebrates the rich cultures of the past and present and entertains and educates children, adults and families about the production of local food and fiber that sustain local economies and generations of hard-working families. Our mission is: To gather, present and preserve the history and culture of the families and individual men and women involved in Idaho sheep ranching and to honor their contributions to the development of Idaho and the West. Trailing of the Sheep has been named in the Top Ten Fall Festivals in the World, Top 200 Best U.S. Festivals and the Top 100 Festivals in N. America.
