Achieving Atmosphere and Surface Layers in Low-Fired Pots Learn how to make functional wheel-thrown pots by using a tabletop banding wheel, as well as a slow turning electric wheel. Using earthenware in electric kilns, Sasha plays with surface decorations that both depict imagery and mimic atmospheric effects. If you love Soda-Fired, atmospheric effects but only have access to an electric kiln, these techniques will help you further your exploration in interesting spontaneous results. Exuberant Clay: Form and Surface In this 2-day workshop, participants will explore the various hand-building and surface design techniques that Carol uses to achieve her unusual complex forms and rich, colorful surfaces. 1. Handbuilding techniques covered will include building complex forms with multiple wooden drop molds, creating texture slabs, and building with tar paper. Carol will bring drop molds for participants to use 2. Exploring multiple surface design techniques to create richness and depth in the work. These will include: layering colors and patterns with underglazes, transferring drawings, carving and inlay, wax and shellac resist, accentuating surface texture with stains, and using slips to transfer pattern and texture. EXPLORE THE ART OF RADIAL DESIGN THROUGH MANDALAS. In this workshop participants will learn what a mandala is and how different cultures create and utilize the symmetry and patterns of mandalas. Inspiration will be drawn from radial designs found in nature and from mandalas around the world. We will identify the different elements of mandalas and explore the use of personal symbolism in the creation of our own unique mandala designs. Participants will learn several different techniques for mandala making and have the opportunity to choose an approach that allows them to express their creativity through a one of a kind mandala. This workshop takes place on Thu, June 25 from 10 am-4 pm at the Hailey Classroom.

WITH SALLY METCALF Basket making is a meditation as well as an art form. Basketry is one of the oldest known crafts dating back to more than ten thousand years. The weaving techniques haven’t changed and the evidence is found everywhere there is civilization. In this class, you will learn and use the twining technique to make either a 2” diameter plate or a little round box, just the right size for a ring. A lid can be made out of class. The material we use will be 4 and 7 ply waxed linen, in a multitude of beautiful colors. One of the joys of crafting with this material is watching its transformation from natural substance to an art piece. This class takes place Tue–Thu, June 30, July 1 & 2, from 10 am–3 pm. Learn to make a unique handmade journal perfect for writing or lettering in. In this class, students will learn three different methods to hand decorate paper that will then be used to construct a hardcover drum leaf book of their very own. No bookmaking experience is necessary as we will cover basic bookbinding techniques such as finding paper grain, folding paper, joining paper, and covering boards. Students will be provided with clear instructions and handouts. This is a great class if you are new to bookmaking! This workshop takes place Wed, July 29 from 10 am-4 pm.

Encaustic monotype uses a heated palette with an application of pigmented wax on the palette’s metal surface to create instant results. It is an intuitive process that is quick, unpredictable, and spontaneous! Printing with pigmented waxes offers an opportunity to investigate a wide variety of ideas and methods to inspire and expand the artist’s visual language. Many techniques will be presented throughout the workshop to create encaustic prints utilizing variables of heat, wax paper and pressure to produce a multitude of interesting effects. Adding to this, a variety of mark-making ideas will be demonstrated using different media, such as graphite and inks for students to further enhance their work. The bookplate has been gracing the inside front covers of books for centuries. In this workshop, we will combine collagraph, a non-traditional bookplate printing technique using a collection of textures for markmaking with the image transfer process to include our favorite quote. She teaches printmaking in her studio and as a teaching artist for the Idaho Commission on the Arts, Idaho Parents Unlimited, and an adjunct at Boise State University. Nack received her BFA in Printmaking and BA in Art History from Boise State University after a three-decade career in paper and graphics marketing. She pursues her passion for printmaking by actively engaging in community-wide printmaking experiences and exhibitions.

Using photos of our beautiful Gem State for inspiration, participants will work through several exercises on paper that explore design elements and principles such as line, shape, repetition, and value. The focus of this process is to learn different approaches of abstracting from reality that can be used in designing future artworks. Participants will leave with a work of art made of either fused fabrics or collaged papers. CLASS TAKES PLACE TUE & WED, AUG 25 & 26 FROM 10AM-4PM. Medium: Mixed Media Collage Age and ability: 16 yrs. and older, beginners welcome ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Boise artist, Lisa Flowers Ross, creates abstract textile art that reduces core elements into basic shapes and organic forms. Her hand-dyed colors and distinct edges create a graphic quality, while added stitching enhances the tactile nature of the fabric. In her body of work, nature and daily observation are her main inspirations. Flowers Ross’ artwork has been exhibited in solo, group and juried exhibitions nationally and internationally, and are included in private, public, and corporate collections.
