Sun Valley Music Festival Music Director, Alasdair Neale, returns to host his popular “Upbeat with Alasdair” speaking series on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but space is limited and the event is often full. Edwin Outwater, conductor and curator of the upcoming Winter Season joins Festival Music Director Alasdair Neale for an intimate talk on the art of directing a musical performance. It will be a rare encounter with two accomplished conductors on one stage. Titled “Life as a Conductor: A Chat with Friends and Colleagues Alasdair Neale and Edwin Outwater,” the two maestros will discuss their experiences as conductors.

Free lecture and discussion with United Vision for Idaho, Lecia Brooks and Adrienne Evans As part of its production of Eleanor Burgess’ “The Niceties” Company of Fools (COF) is partnering with United Vision for Idaho (UVI), a progressive, Boise-based coalition dedicated to social, economic and environmental justice, to host a series of conversations and public engagement events to discuss the important themes presented in the play. On Sunday, March 1, 2020, Company of Fools, UVI, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and St. Thomas Episcopal Church will jointly present a public lecture and discussion with Lecia Brooks, Chief Workplace Transformation Officer at the SPLC, and Adrienne Evans, Executive Director of UVI. Attendees are strongly encouraged to buy tickets for COF’s matinee performance of “The Niceties” at 3 p.m. that same afternoon, as the play illuminates many of the same topics that will be addressed in the noontime lecture and discussion.

The old saying, “it takes a village,” applies to many aspects of community, and particularly education. To advance dialogue around the support children need and are being provided, both inside and outside of the public education system, the Community Library and the Blaine Country School District present an evening with Jamie Vollmer. Vollmer is the author of “Schools Cannot Do It Alone ” and an award-winning champion of public education working to halt the erosion of public trust and build support for America’s public schools. During his visit to the Wood River Valley, Vollmer will also be participating in events with the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, Hunger Coalition, and St. Luke’s Wood River Valley to aid discussion in how the next generation succeeds.

PLEASE JOIN US AT THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY For a presentation by Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia, Dream Scholar Alumna Alisha has a fascinating story to tell which she will share with our community, along with a presentation on the impact of trauma on the brain, the human capacity to overcome adversity, and the power of education. Alisha was in Portland, Oregon’s first “I Have a Dream” Foundation class. Alisha faced significant challenges and adversity as a young child. With hard work and consistent support from the “I Have a Dream” Foundation and her extended community, Alisha went on to graduate high school, received a scholarship to Stanford University and received her medical degree from George Washington University. Alisha is a psychiatrist focused on trauma and addiction issues and will begin her tenure as Associate Professor at Harvard University this summer. Three Day Workshop: Improv Comedy with Andrew Beck @ Liberty Theatre

This workshop is an introduction to group and team improvisational comedy covering spontaneity, group focus, ensemble building, narrative skills, and how to identify and exploit patterns and connections between ideas that help create brilliant and hilarious improv comedy. Participants will learn basic and intermediary improv comedy skills, including various “comedy sports” games that will be put on full display at a performance for the community! Andrew Beck, who has an MFA from the University of Nebraska and is a Theatre Instructor at Oregon State University, is the Artistic Director of No-Filter Improv in Portland, Oregon. The INTENSIVES are designed for adults and young adults who are interested in the workshop topics, and participants who put in a bit of time to prepare beforehand will get the most out of the sessions. Also, most INTENSIVES workshops require a little bit of homework — Each three-day workshop is limited to 12 participants, and the registration fee is $50. Join SheJumps for Wild Skills Junior Ski Patrol, a day camp at Sun Valley Resort on Saturday, March 14! Young girls will learn mountain safety and first aid while working with the strong women of the ski patrol community. This event is intended for intermediate to expert skiers/snowboarders ages 8 – 17 who identify as female. This SheJumps Wild Skills event is structured as a full day camp experience, parents/legal guardians drop girls off, they are split into teams based on their skier ability and then rotate through different stations. Throughout the day, girls are taught a range of outdoor skills that are utilized by ski patrollers to keep the mountain safe. Girls will work alongside female patrollers and volunteers to learn more about the many facets of mountain safety and first aid. With Tucker Nichols Join SVMoA for participating artist Tucker Nichols’s talk about the role of play, experimentation and interactivity in his practice. Many of Nichols’s projects give museum visitors the opportunity to participate in them in some way, from rearranging objects to create sculptural installations to making images using colorful shapes on an overhead projector. Based in Northern California, Nichols’s work has been featured at the Drawing Center in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Denver Art Museum, Den Frie Museum in Copenhagen, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. A show of his sculpture, Almost Everything On The Table, was recently on view at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. His drawings have been published in McSweeney’s, The Thing Quarterly, The New Yorker and the Op-Ed pages of The New York Times. The Sun Valley Institute and NBC are partnering to bring the New Amsterdam Talk Back Listening Tour to Carey, Idaho on March, 21, 2020. This is the third in a series of Listening Tour events conducted by the executive producers of the show to “capture the stories” not being told by Hollywood. We are at risk of losing rural America, a place of grit, resilience and self-reliance. The stories told by attendees at this event will inform the future development of the show and help drive the bigger conversation around the real issues facing rural Idaho and rural America as a whole. The Carey, Idaho event will start with a screening of an episode of New Amsterdam that highlights the show’s commitment to exploring and revealing the issues affecting America. After the episode, New Amsterdam star Ryan Eggold and Executive Producer Peter Horton will be joined on the stage by a representative of rural southern Idaho and a moderator to hear individual stories from the audience.

Utilize design and creative problem solving while making unique and repurposed books! Using a variety of basic binding techniques, you will learn how to alter existing books to make journals, sketchbooks, and photo albums. No previous bookmaking experience necessary. Rachael Mayer is a fiber artist based out of Boise, ID. With a BA in Anthropology & Ethnic Studies and an MFA in Studio Art, Rachael bridges her two areas of study by making work about communities, social networks, and systems. She moved frequently as a child and young adult and uses her experiences traveling across the country with her family to contextualize social constructions within landscape and topography. She has interned at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, she has exhibited her work across the United States, and has been published in the Surface Design Journal. Rachael grew up with a mother who quilted and uses sewing as a metaphor to connecting to community and the landscape around us. She has a MFA with an interest in fiber and paper sculptures. This workshops takes place Sat, Mar 28, from 9:30am-4:30pm.
