This summer, Music Director Alasdair Neale and the Festival’s all-star orchestra present over three weeks of word-class performances in a gorgeous, outdoor alpine setting. Whether it’s epic works from Beethoven to Strauss, contemporary masterpieces from acclaimed newcomers, or Americana favorites from film and Broadway, there is truly something for everyone. Renowned guest artists include pianist Daniil Trifonov, violinist Leila Josefowicz, and pianist Orion Weiss. The genre-defying trio Time For Three returns to unveil a new concerto by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. And the popular post-concert lawn party returns. It’s all free, available for everyone to enjoy from the open-air Sun Valley Pavilion and its adjacent lawn.

This Summer Season will also feature Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” for the 2022 Gala Fundraising Concert on July 31. Unpretentious and endlessly entertaining, “Carmina Burana” is a rollicking choral tour de force – if classical music had a “rock opera,” this would be it. Ticket sales support the Sun Valley Music Festival and its community initiatives and help keep the concerts and education programs free for everyone.

“Carmina Burana” is one of the most-performed classical works in the repertoire. It is based on a set of 24 poems written back in the 13th century by the Goliards, a group of defrocked monks and vagabond students. The lyrics reflect their lusty lifestyles with odes to fate and fortune, biting satires of religious themes, and nods to gambling, carnal pleasures, and the joys of the tavern. When the composer Carl Orff discovered the collection, he set about composing music to match its exuberant character.

About Sun Valley Music Festival

The Sun Valley Music Festival’s mission is to enrich, inspire, and instill in our community a lifelong love of classical music through extraordinary, free concerts and education programs. Festival programs provide opportunities for people from all walks of life to listen, learn, and play. Now in its 37th year, it is the largest privately supported, free-admission orchestra in the United States.

Over 100 world-class musicians from North America’s most distinguished orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Houston Symphony, comprise the Festival Orchestra. Summer Season concerts are held in July and August at the spectacular R.E. Holding Sun Valley Pavilion, in the mountain-resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho. Internationally renowned guest artists such as Gautier Capuçon, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, Kristin Chenoweth, Seraphic Fire, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet have performed with the Festival.

The Festival strives to introduce every Wood River Valley student to the joys of classical music, to inspire the next generation of music lovers. Its year-round and summer Music Institute programs provide tuition-free instruction for string, piano, and voice students of all skill levels — from elementary through high school — that goes beyond the fundamentals and embraces the entire musician.
