Young Latino Leaders Panel

As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, and in partnership with the Hispanic Latin US Taskforce, The Community Library will host a panel discussion celebrating and hearing from young Latino leaders in our community. The discussion will be moderated by Eduardo Escalera, 2022 Wood River High School Graduate and current student at the Sun Valley Culinary Institute. Panelists to be announced soon. The conversation will highlight the incredible work of high school students, recent graduates, and other young leaders, inviting them to share with us their visions for the Wood River Valley.

LECTURE: Author Sandra Cisneros

Sandra Cisneros’ lecture is proudly presented by The Community Library and Sun Valley Museum of Art. Cisneros is an award-winning poet, short story writer, novelist, and essayist whose work explores the lives of the working class. Her novel The House on Mango Street has sold over seven million copies, has been translated into over twenty-five languages, and is required reading in elementary, high school, and universities across the nation. As part of her stay, Cisneros will address more than 200 Wood River High School students who have read her novel. A new book, Martita, I Remember You/Martita, te recuerdo, a story in English and in Spanish, was published in 2021. In the fall of 2022, a new collection of poetry, Woman Without Shame, Cisneros’s first in 28 years, will be published by Knopf and by Vintage Español in a Spanish language translation, Mujer sin vergüenza, by Liliana Valenzuela. Her presentation will be in both English and Spanish. Cisneros is a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico. As a single woman, she chose to have books instead of children. ART WORKSHOP: Bilingual ceramic workshop with artist George Rodgriguez

Join ceramic artist George Rodriguez in the creation of a Día de los Muertos community altar. In these workshops, we will be making offerings out of clay that symbolize our present community, ancestors and future hopes. George will demonstrate how to make small portraits, alebrijes and flowers with wet clay utilizing several building techniques. You will also have the opportunity to decorate a tile to be added to the exterior of the altar. All ages are welcome at this fun creation event. We will provide materials and tools — join us to add your story to the community altar. This workshop will take place on Thu, Sep 22 from 3–5pm and will be taught in both English and Spanish.

HPL Art Talk Explores Frida Kahlo

The Hailey Public Library will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the first of a three-part series of free Art Talks recognizing Hispanic icons of modern art. On Friday, September 16th at 7:00 PM at Hailey Town Center West, art educator Kathryn Zupsic will explore “The Life and Art of Frida Kahlo,” the most famous, recognizable female artist in the world. The talk will be offered in English and simultaneously translated into Spanish.
