Dispatches from a Residency at the Hemingway House
Kevin Lavelle, the Library’s Hemingway Writer-In-Residence for November, will share some of his work from his time in residency at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House. During his residency, Kevin will be working on the darkly comic novel “Sunset And Time.” When a brokenhearted Empathic Therapist’s grief stops time, a combative hummingbird guides him through his past lives to stop a hateful geologist from turning the world’s love to stone. He will discuss his writing process with the community and invite your questions on the writing and creative life. Kevin Lavelle is a screen and fiction writer living in Los Angeles. A native of Ireland, his writing includes a psychological thriller, a horror and a young adult/fantasy. Dark magical realism with heart is his arena, whatever the genre. He is currently at work on a novel. Lavelle is the inaugural recipient of the Writing by Writers Hemingway House residency with The Community Library. Register to attend in person or watch online. How negotiable is a “fact?” When John’s essay about the suicide of Las Vegas teenager Levi Presley is selected by an illustrious magazine editor, Emily Penrose, to be featured in a fast-approaching publication, Jim Fingal is assigned his first major job: the straight forward task of fact-checking the essay. Jim–with sincerity, a dogged loyalty to accuracy, and a tight deadline–digs into the essay and begins to discover it is rife with inconsistencies, fabrications and misleading claims. John maintains the liberties taken are necessary–that the piece is an essay, …

History Happy Hour: Amplifying Idaho’s Hispanic Voices
The Idaho State Museum has long celebrated diverse cultures and the telling of stories from multiple voices. After witnessing the positive impact from our relaunch of Día de Muertos and how celebrating Idaho’s diverse cultures affects the community at large we were inspired to add deeper and inclusive programing to our portfolio. We are proud to host the virtual panel discussion Nuestras Voces, or “Our Voices,” a new complimentary state-wide virtual program in Spanish. In this monthly 30-minute presentation, panelists discuss a variety of topics from past to present within Idaho. This unique opportunity offers Idaho’s Spanish-speaking community a new platform at the Museum to discuss contemporary challenges, historical perspectives, and light-hearted stories from Idaho’s rich Hispanic history and community. For this discussion with the Nuestras Voces team, panelists Maria Ortega (Visitor Services Representative, Idaho State Museum), Emily Chivers (Curator of Education, Idaho State Museum) and JJ Saldana (Community Resource Development Specialist, Idaho Commission of Hispanic Affairs) come together to share more about this new program, the community it is serving, the Idaho State Museum’s commitment to diverse voices, and the impact it aims to provide. You can participate in the conversation through the audience Q&A by emailing questions to …
